Overview
The perfect primer for being your horse's health advocate.

Description
Taking good care of your horse's veterinary needs involves two aspects: The first is knowing how to tell when he's healthy and how to keep him that way. You'll learn how to monitor your horse's normal patterns, so you'll quickly recognize when he's not up to par. And we'll discuss vaccinations and dewormers, and outline the most effective schedule for administering them.
The second aspect of equine health care concerns circumstances when your horse is sick, lame or just not quite right. For those times Dr. Elanor Kellon gives us practical insight into what we can reasonably expect from a veterinary exam. We learn how various diagnostic tests work, why horses should get Coggins-tested, what X-rays will tell us and more.
When we hear the diagnoses of an illness or lameness, we're often left not really understanding the nature of the problem, its causes and treatment options. Chapters on equine health problems from arthritis to tying-up syndrome fill in that gap. A good grasp of the problems from the low-tech, nutritional aspects to the most high-tech treatment may make all the difference in our horse's recovery or in the quality of his life as he becomes more comfortable with a chronic problem. A perfect primer for the caregiver.
